When you call Phil, remember to mention that this is part of your enriching friendships project.

Seriously, though, a good and useful article.

Erik,

Thanks so much for sharing your experience. Over the last 3 years, I've started and stopped GTD, and it's bothered me I couldn't stick with it. There were so many aspects of the system I just loved.

Your post is an inspiration. I'm starting again!

Erik Hanburg!

Thank you so much for writing this article. I'm just getting started and have found most people are so far into GTD that they seem to have their own language. Does Rosetta Stone have a GTD module??? :P

It was especially helpful that you are able to stick with it for 6 months even though you go after anything new and shiney. That describes me perfectly! I am passionate about lots of things and full of energy, but so far it has mostly translated into my darting around like a manic squirrel.

Your article was extreemly helpful. THANK YOU!

3 years later and...

It was PlanPlus (Covey software) that pushed me into using GTD. Actually, I loved the flow of PlanPlus, but the lack of support, software kinks, etc., led me elsewhere.

I found, and still find, GTD to be too cumbersome to keep up on a day to day basis. And some of the theory, IMHO, rests on utopian ideas, rarely achieved by humans. For example: Mind Dumps = peace/harmony. Sounds great! Yet the mind being what it is (combined with social/cultural/economic forces) will give the average person more than enough to worry about.

And yet, I still keep my projects (with next actions), a "waiting for" list, and weekly review. Though my lists are organized by Roles a la Covey, and general productivity philosophy a la 7 Habits.

The combo of GTD/Covey works for me. Though I humbly submit that procrastination is still a persuasive foe. The battle continues...
