Bill,
I switched to Omnifocus early this year because I out-grew Things. It turned out that I needed to attack the much steeper learning curve of Omnifocus to get to features that Things lacked, and I started to want. The set-up document, "GTD, Omnifocus, and You," helped me a great deal.

Much of the sophistication I have built into my lists, on Omnifocus, pertains to my work.

I like Things, and for a lot of people it is adequate. But there is no way I could do in Things what I am doing in Omnifocus now.

Chip,
When - and why - did you switch from Things to Omnifocus? In a previous post about a year ago (http://www.gtdtimes.com/2009/06/11/look-inside-someones-gtd-setup/) you said that Omnifocus was "too complicated." What makes Omnifocus so valuable now that you engineer all of your hardware and software around it?

when you say "iCalendar" do you mean the built-in iCal program or is this some third-party program? i tried googling "iCalendar mac" and couldn't find it. -andrew

Chip,
Great article. Very insightful. Sounds like you make what could be a complex and frustrating environment very user-friendly. I find that the more simplicity I put into my system the better. I use Lotus Notes and Eproductivity today, but thinking about switching from blackberry to iphone, so I may have to adopt some of your recommendations. I'm in sales as well and I like your category for Account Development - I think I'm going to steal that one. Today, I use Oracle as a CRM to manage my pipeline and create projects off of each opportunity. Curious to know how you manage sub-projects for various "projects" in your pipeline? Thanks for the post!

This is very similar to my own setup. I work for IBM and they obviously rely on Lotus Notes. One minor twist is that I create folders in Lotus Notes that are used exclusively as reference. Then I just drag any emails I need from Lotus Notes into the note field in OmniFocus to create a link to my email if I need to reference it from withing some action in OmniFocus.

This is very similar to what I was doing at my old job. I'll be starting a new job on Monday, so it will be interesting to see what tools they use and how I adapt my system.

Thanks for posting this - it makes those of us with more complicated system diagrams feel like we're still doing it right.

Chip,
Great article....Really needed to read that today as I have just made a major shift in my career and going thru the same GTD system updates. Been a very stressful month. I finally have the parts, pieces, plan and direction...just about 2 more weeks of fine tuning and getting the trust back in the system to 100%:) Thanks again for the great post!
