Fantastic. I have just finished the GTD book and was trying to write an overview of how to put it all together for myself. You did the job nicely. Thank you very much.

Remember that the goal of GTD is to make it easier to do work that matters – not procrastinating by endlessly improving your system instead of doing productive work.Make sure that everything in your Tickler is referenced on your calendar. Because moms may not be checking their Tickler every day, they want to be sure to note all “tickled” items on their calendars (which they will be checking every day).

Great ideas here to implement. I agree with above in terms of weekly review - it really is a great way to judge how much you have accomplished and to schedule other tasks/ activities etc for the coming week. Thanks for the blog!

I'm a huge fan of GTD and a big believer in the power of the weekly review. But what I've found for myself and for my time coaching clients is that focusing on having one big weekly review typically becomes overwhelming.

Instead it seems to be more effective to schedule non-negotiable daily reviews at the beginning or end of the day, during the ScheduleMakeover.com process. Having a distinct set of lists that you check and inboxes you process each day diminishes the nagging feeling that you're not crystal clear on your current top priorities. And it frees up the weekly review to be a simpler high level overview of the upcoming weeks instead of an overwhelming time to catch up on a backlog of processing.

To your brilliance!

Thanks for that succinct summary. I'm doing research for an in-service on staying positive, upbeat and productive after numerous cut backs and lay offs. I will pass this on.

Great overview!! It's so simple, and yet sometimes it's so complex, and so hard.

I have extra time this summer (a chapter I was writing for an academic type book, Oxford U. Press, is finally really finished and in press --it ended up taking me a whole year to do it-- AND while I am working with doctoral students on their dissertations through the summer, I am not teaching any classes) and I almost feel like I have a fluid, open mind (like water?). The first thing I'm doing is renovating my GTD system, if I spend too much time on methods now, it's overdue, been a long time since I've done that. Words of a GTD coach, Meg, really stuck with me, "You can consider the process of "defining work" as part of your real work system. I think from what I've read here and elsewhere, many of us fall off the GTD wagon on occasion, and this is my time to review my whole process. I'm lucky because I love this part of the process.

Thanks for those simple but essential points, it's a super review of our working system.

Very well written synopsis on the main tenants of GTD. I would like to see more about the execution of the ideas - and pitfals. Never seen a term "productivity porn", but it well defines all those who chase the hottest tool. Weekly reviews are great tools to get back on track, if your week is not perfect.
