Summertime vacation poll

More than half of workers surveyed by Talent Management say they will work during their summer vacation.  Maybe that’s why USA Today wonders why we don’t feel rested when the “vacation” is over.

How much do you work on vacation? Take the poll below, and your additional comments are welcome.

  1. I feel in need of vacation from vacation. I love my work, but wish I could learn how to really take a break from it. If I try “unplugging” as recommended, I end up with an email inbox that’s overwhelming, it’s not worth it. How is anyone able to completely turn off electronics?

  2. I enjoy vacations, including no email. But it takes planning. I allow a day or two after I get back, to process the accumulated email. That means I schedule several hours of meetings, with myself, on the first two days back.

  3. Before I go on vacation, I set some email filters that automatically delete those mails I wouldn’t read after returning anyway. The rest ends up in a temporary ‘after vacation’ email folder, which functions much like my someday/maybe folder.

I work in education where the new working year starts after the summer, so the first day after my vacation I do my yearly GTD review. After that I process the accumulated mail which also takes about one whole day. For me this is a great way getting into the working rhythm again.

  4. I answered none because I haven’t taken a vacation in years. Living where you work means you are never offline. Need to add something to show whether you’ve even *had* a vacation within say the last 5-10 years….

  5. I’m a web designer/developer with my own domain, and I found a great vacation auto-reply response online, along the lines of “I’m away for vacation so I will leave it up to you to decide if it should be interrupted. If so, please re-send your e-mail to interruptmyvacation@mydimain.com, and I will get back to you.”

No interruptions were to be had! :)
