GTD & OmniFocus

By far, one of the most popular implementations of GTD on a Mac, is with OmniFocus. It does an elegant job of GTD project and action management on the Mac and iPhone.  There’s a great write up from the “Mac Samurai”about his journey with GTD & OmniFocus. We thought you might find this useful.

(Yes, we know many of you like “Things” by Cultured Code too!)

New GTD-focused iPhone App

Charles Perry attended a public GTD: Mastering Workflow class.  He loved it and said he “came home fired up to dive deeper into GTD.”  He looked around for an application that would do GTD lists how he wanted them to work on the iPhone and didn’t find one.  So he built it!  3 months later, he submitted ActionLists to the Apple Store.  Charles wrote to Danny Bader, his GTD instructor, and said:

As I was putting together my personal system, I realized that there were no great tools for implementing GTD on the iPhone (the tool that I wanted to use). Being the geek that I am, I decided to write one. The result is Action Lists, a fairly strict interpretation of the GTD process for the iPhone. My goals with Action Lists were to be the best GTD implementation on the iPhone, and to make it easy to use so that you can quickly get to the information you need. There’s also a free version called Action Lists Lite that is limited to only a few tasks so that you can “try before you buy.”

I know that you aren’t in the business of plugging non-David Allen Company GTD solutions, but I wanted to make you aware of this new tool, and thank you again for a great experience up in Chicago this January.  - Charles Perry, Daze End Software

We know this is one of MANY applications and tools out there to support a GTD implementation.  Our team is putting together a comprehensive listing of all of the “GTD-friendly” applications out there.  We hope to have something soon and will reach out to the community for your input.

Too Much to Do

In April of this year, I left my full time job to “go freelance.” My schedule has been all over the place as a result. Between writing and doing web development for my fiancé’s graphic design firm,  managing my coworking office space in downtown Tacoma, operating my small theater production company, presiding over my condo association,  trying to get a novel published, and last – but most certainly not least  – getting married at the end of the year; you could say I’m a pretty busy guy.  While no single one of these activities takes up a full work week, the number and variety of things I needed to do made me feel like I was dropping the ball on all of them.

Giveaway of the Day Starts also Giving Mac Stuff Away – Yay!

giveawayoftheday.jpgSorry for the rhyming singlet above, I usually can refrain but couldn’t help myself for this little tidbit of good news. Windows users in the know have long benefit from the kind folks at Giveaway of the Day or GOTD as they call it. However up until February Mac users had been left out in the cold. Well, no longer, these cool people received a deluge of mail from Mac-addicts begging for a little love of their own, and like any company that has the sense to “have a clue” they listened to what people wanted and stepped up to deliver.

Now, I realize that this is hardly breaking news since it was announced on the 8th of February – but I wasn’t aware of this until this morning and so I imagine that at least a few people out there probably missed the news as well. In any case, for those that are wondering if all they give away is stuff you’d never want anyway, if you’d found them yesterday you would have been able to download your own copy of the Evernote Beta for the Mac, totally free, a $49.95 value..

Sadly, it’s too late to get a copy of Evernote, but there are sure to be other cool programs available tomorrow and the next day and the day after that and…

Live from South by Southwest: GTD for Startups

Long time GTD blogger Derek Scruggs and Scott McDaniel are presenting a ‘core conversation’ this morning at the South by Southwest Interactive Festival (sxsw) being held in Austin for the next 5 days. We’re all huddled in a ballroom and the GTD folks arrived early!

The topic is GTD for Startups. They are involved in a new company Survey Gizmo. The session is very hands on with real-time q and a.

They have found some good collaborative technical solutions. One is the use of IMAP, which allows for common synching of email from various clients. They use Zoho CRM (a poor man’s Sales Force) as their CRM, a majority of the collaborative features at a fraction of the price. They use Google Calendars for sharing of multiple calendars.

Slides from the session are available here.
