Getting Nothing Done with Fire and Water

Several of us recently got together at David Allen’s house for a casual get-together. For some of us, me at least, it was the first time to see David since he surfaced from writing his soon-to-be-bestseller GTD book #3, Making it All Work

David’s been submerged in the details of the book writing for some time and, with the current draft off to the publisher, it was time to hang out.

David and I got a few minutes to geek out with the new Nokia E90 Executive Communicator and talk about Notes 8. (We kept the geek talk to a minimum.)

Then, we visited with several of the David Allen Company team in David and Kathryn’s way cool “outdoor living room”.

Next time, I’m bringing marshmallows, chocolate, and gram crackers!

Left to right: Eric, Pat, Natalie, Kelly, David and Ellen. Foreground: Molly, the chief of security and public relations.

We had a wonderful time. On the way out of town, Paul Garth invited us for a tour of the new world headquarters of The David Allen Company:

The all-glass conference room is equipped with the emperor’s new conference table and chairs. (Only GTD black-belts can see it.)

Paul and I wondered what would happen if we dropped in a rock (just to test David’s theory, of course)…

Yup, the water responded appropriately, and Paul and I got to mop up the lobby.

One More Thing to Keep You Busy When You Should be Doing Something Else: a procrastination test

end1.gif“I love deadlines…especially the whooshing sound they make as they go flying by” -Douglas Adams

From time to time virtually all of us put off until tomorrow what we should have done yesterday. Most of the time we do this knowing full well that we ought to get busy getting whatever needs doing, done. What’s odd about this behavior is that in spite of our knowledge to the contrary even the most logical people would be hard pressed to explain exactly why they’re procrastinating. It’s a question that has perplexed us for a long time. In fact there are records of procrastination of one sort or another stretching back some 3000 years.

It’s also an ongoing area of study and while no concrete reasons why procrastination is so pervasive in society, there are ways that you can learn how much you tend towards procrastination when compared with the rest of the world. In addition, you can get some helpful hints on ways to improve should your level of procrastination be higher than you’d like and you’ll be helping science along the way.

Here for your idle-time pleasure (unless of course you choose to take this test when you should be doing something else!) is a brief test courtesy of Procrastination Central that is designed to measure your degree of procrastination. It takes about 15-20 minutes to answer the questions and you’ll get your results immediately upon completion of the test. If you’re taking this at work be sure to close your office door :-)

GTD Contest Winners

vip_winners2.jpgOver the past several weeks we’ve had a number of information contests where I promised prizes to people for sending in comments.

For sending in quotes that we liked and even some we hadn’t heard before

Susan Culligan and Meghan Wilker

are our winners. Good job you two. Thanks for the excellent quotes.

For sending in some useful suggestions on how we can continue to improve GTDtimes and make it more useful and relevant to you

Craig Maloney , Mike St. Pierre and Eric Grey

are our winners. Thanks for the constructive commentary guys.

Everyone listed above, please email your mailing address to my attention with “Winner” in the subject line. Send it to editor at GTDtimes dot com.

Each of our winning commentators will be receiving hardcover copies of “Ready for Anything” personally autographed by David Allen - see, it really does pay off to comment at GTDtimes!

Don’t worry, if you missed you chance to win this time, there will be plenty of other opportunities and plenty of nice prizes in the future.

Yep. There are GTD’ers in China, too.

China Daily has a short piece on the practice of GTD in China. While it seems to me they need David to pay a visit and help them understand his methods to an even greater degree, it is nevertheless fascinating to see how the broad appeal and true value of GTD cuts across all ethnic, social and cultural boundaries and offers life improving benefits to anyone, anywhere at virtually any point in their lives.

Thank You Readers! And a Few Words on GTDtimes Future Upgrades

thank-you-bodies.jpgFirst…Thank You!

Well, it’s been a few weeks since we launched GTDtimes and I wanted to take a moment and thank those of you that have jumped aboard and joined us in this adventure. I’d especially like to thank those of you that have taken the time, not only to read something here, but who’ve also gone the extra step and added their own voice to the discussion.

In addition, I’d like to offer my special appreciation to those of you who took the time to provide us with feedback in response to my request for your thoughts on how we’re doing so far and what you’d like to see us do more, less, better or differently in the future. If you’d still like to offer an opinion in this regard, by all means, please do! We received some incredible suggestions from those of you that spoke up and I think you’ll be glad that you did speak up as we intend to take what you’ve said to heart - you should see this reflected in the content as well as some other changes that we intend to implement in the near future.

Thanks also go out to the good folks that sent in quotes that they find relevant to their own personal approach. These were so great I piped up and told folks at DavidCo that they should make a “GTD Quote a Day Calendar” - I don’t know if they will do this, but if enough people speak up and say that they’d buy one - or even put their money where their mouths are and pre-order one that would probably go a long way to making the DavidCo folks sit up and take notice.

Now On To Some House Keepinggift.gif

I know that one of the reasons we had so many comments on the two posts above was because I promised some cool gifts for the folks that we determined to have offered the best suggestions as well as the quotes we enjoyed most. In both cases we’re still making up our minds. Be assured that we will come to a decision quickly and notify the winners by email and then with those folks granting us permission, we will announce their names as well as the cool things they’ve won.

If you submitted a suggestion or a quote and aren’t victorious this time, don’t worry… there will be plenty of chances to win cool stuff as I plan to make giving cool stuff out something of a regular occurrence around these parts. Please don’t write in to inquire - the winner will be contacted by us directly.

And Finally, The Future

Way up there in the headline above I mentioned something about GTD Times future enhancements. Here’s where I tell you about some new things we’ll be adding to the site soon. I’m excited about these pending developments as these are things I have always wanted to implement on my prior blogs but never got the chance to do so.

One thing that I think you’ll find quite exciting is that we’ll be introducing a Marketplace section soon. If you’re a company that makes GTD oriented software or really any productivity oriented or organizational software you’re going to love this. A basic listing is free. that’s right FREE as in beer or no charge. We’ll also be offering other options with two levels of more comprehensive (and larger and better positioned) listings for very reasonable fees.

crystal_ball.jpgThe Marketplace section will also have some more standard classified type advertising so if you’ve got something that you think would go over with the sort folks that read a publication like this one, then you’ll probably like this. I’m imaging that everything from Service Business to folks selling books, audios or even who want to promote another product or service will like this inexpensive way to reach a highly valuable audience.

We’ll also be starting a Jobs Board soon. You are probably familiar with these so I won’t go into superfluous detail; I’ll simply say that GTDers are known to be some of the best and most productive employees around thus there will be no place else where as a prospective employer you could identify so many people with such well developed abilities to execute. “Nuff Said.

But wait, there’s more! More sponsorship opportunities are coming available and there are some good deals to be had. If you think that sponsoring GTD Times with a guaranteed way to spark interest and attention from such a talented and successful group than by placing your corporate identity on the front page of a blog that is focused on aggregating the best content, the top writers and the latest information from the Guru himself, David Allen, than anywhere else you could advertise. Anyone interested in learning about these opportunities - which include guaranteed placement, the opportunity to be the title sponsor of a specific section as well as some new banner and tower advertising slots too.

If you’d like more detailed information write to me at Editor at GTDtimes dot com and I’ll send you an information packet with an insertion order and terms. If you’d like to write articles for the GTDtimes, speak up and I’ll send you a writer’s guidelines package so you can see what it’s all about.

Oh- and before I forget, we’ll be adding in some regular features here on GTDtimes that we think you’ll like and which will give some additional breadth and consistency to the site. I won’t spill the beans on what these sections will be yet but let it suffice to say that if you know GTD you shold be able to guess the sections - or at least a couple of them.

Randy Pausch on Time Management

Randy Pausch has a unique perspective on managing his time, you see, he’s got pancreatic cancer and is aware that only a vanishingly small percentage of people survive this disease. This lecture is over one hour in length including a long introduction but given the speaker and the message I would say it is well worth the time.

GTDtimes Requests Your Feedback*

survey.jpgWell, GTDtimes has been up and running for a couple of weeks now and we continue to learn, evaluate and modify our vision for this site. Since the team views GTDtimes as a community resource I thought it would be very helpful to ask you, the readers, for your impressions to date. If you could take a few moments and respond to some of these questions in the comments it will be incredibly valuable for us as we develop more sections to the site, add additional contributors and create an editorial calendar. Even if you only tell us what you liked or what you hated that would be useful though, a more detailed review would be even better.

Microsoft Gives the World a Telescope

In all of our efforts to be more productive and accomplish more each day, it is sometimes easy to completely forget about why we want to do more or do the same but more efficiently - sometimes it seems, it is all to easy to walk outside on a beautiful, starlit night, and be so lost in thought that we fail to look up at the sky.

This is a shame. After all, if we are so transfixed on doing more that we lose sight of what’s important - including the beauty and majesty of nature, then we’re really missing the whole point of why one would use a system like Getting Things Done in the first place. With this thought in mind, as well as the realization that the night sky may not be all that clear where you happen to live and/or that you may not happen to be all that familiar with the constellations, I wanted to share this amazing new technology that Microsoft is giving to the world. This is the technology that according to one geek source “made Robert Scoble cry”.
